Summer Rain

I remember.... listening to Belinda Carlisle, brings me back to those summers where I sat reading in my room or writing essays, or pretending that my life was better than how I FELT. When I found myself with one individual, I trully felt that he was the one. But he broke my heart, and shortly afterwards, my life changed so much that I don't think I could ever come back. In fact, I don't think I was ever in a place of happiness. My life seems to have always been one where I am pleasing others, and my needs have always been put on the backburner. M tried to understand me but I don't think he could have truly understood. He recently came back into my life by way of social media, and I think it has impacted me in the way that one's past has come back to haunt me. He was always what I wanted and aspired to end up with, but I went down the rabbit hole and never came back. I feel the only option I have these days is to just throw the towel in and a call it a day. I'm just waiting for my puppies to go before me.. D is not for me. I hate him. He killed my spirit more than he will ever know.

Help!

I have been sitting on an assignment for a couple of weeks, not sure how to go about it. The first problem was finally settling on a topic. I chose Human Rights and the Development Trade Off. My understanding of this is the problems with developing in third world countries and the lack of human rights afforded to workers - on one hand you have a company who is willing to build a factory (for example), which creates jobs, brings money into the community/country/economy - and it would seem all good for all. On the other hand, you have a company (most likely a multi-million/billion dollar conglomerate who will go in and offer less than minimum wage, utilise children in their plants or factories - so where do you draw the line?

Culture or Rights - who's right?
A different way to look at this is who are we to say what is right or wrong? Why is it that our way of doing things is far superior or better for all than a country on the other side of the world? I had not really given much thought about this before until it was brought to my attention by two sources - my Human Rights teacher and an author (Malcolm ? - Tipping Point, Blink...) who states that cultural values of countries outside the 'West' are better in raising children with better work ethics (or approach to problems and finding solutions) - in relation to success, self-esteem, etc, in particular, offered this reason for why Asian children are better at math than the kid from Oshawa or Toronto.

So my problem is this: in answering or writing an essay on this topic, what approach will I use and what will I argue about? And how can I relate/link to Indigenous Peoples. Initially, I thought about tying in Ontario's Duty to Consult policy with First Nation communities and natural resources.

More to come....

What is Kiva?

I have made three loans to three businesses in need. I really like this idea and hopefully it will work for all those individuals trying to start their own businesses. Well, I did make a loan to someone who is looking to repair their home, they both have jobs which I think might allow them to be able to pay back loans, I am not sure if anyone else will buy that. I guess the organisation that is working with them would not recommend the project if they didn't have confidence. The loan is for 18 mos. but this is a home for these people. The other business is a shop and construction company. It reminds me of when I was 17 years old and I sponsored a foster child in Brazil, I felt really good about doing something like that. Anyhow, I really believe that people should help others less fortunate regardless of where they are.
